Laksa

There is a change in our Laksa... we have decided to move from Malaysia style Laksa to a Jakarta style Laksa, which is a more Asam based. Hot from our pot for a cold Autumn day.

"Assam laksa is a sour fish-based soup. Asam (or asam jawa) is the Malay word for tamarind, which is commonly used to give the stock its sour flavor. It is also common to use "asam keping" also known as "asam gelugor", dried slices of tamarind fruit, for added sourness. Roti Pisang has landed on our menu

We welcome a new dish to our popular 'Roti' selections... Roti Pisang, which translates to banana flat bread. As most people from the South East prefer a sweetened meal, we thought that it fulfills a breakfast combination with coffee, lunch time sugar punch, or a post dinner dessert. We top the dish with maple syrup and sprinkles of dried coconut.

If you didn't know, bananas weigh on an average of 125 g, of which approximately 75% is water and 25% is dry matter content.

FREE wireless internet at the cafe

As all good places in the world, free wireless exists. Rarely do I find a place where they offer this for free in Sydney. It resides in most major cities globally, so I am happy to offer it for FREE at the cafe. Please, bring a laptop.

In south east Asian cities, the internet travels via the Blackberry or the Handphone (our trusty mobile) more so than at home, but I'm finding more places are popping up in cafes around east Java. So... here's to all restaurants, tattoo parlours, tennis clubs and the likes that offer free internet.

We have finally received the first batch our organic fruit juices from Phoenixs drink company from New Zealand. If you haven't heard about these guys, then please read up on them. Otherwise, for those of you in search of a calming Autumn health drink, then round up. I must note, we also do a mean freshly squezzed 100% orange juice hit with our new industrial juicing machine... yep.

Roti Chanai has kneaded into our menu

Have you tried Roti? You may know this from previous confrontations at street vendors of India, Malaysia or even Singapore. Roti in Malay, translates to bread, where Chanai is to 'knead'. The Roti dough is twirled until it is a thin sheet, folded then cooked to create a hot round flatbread served with warm dahl or curry. A famous breakfast or lunch meal at the Mamak stalls of Malaysia. Try our original Roti Chanai or our Roti telur bawang (egg and onion) served with chicken curry or vegetable dahl garnished with a fresh slice of avocado.

Otherwise, go for the 'Murtabak,' a folded egg bread, filled with meat, potato and onion. A meal originally found in Saudi Arabia (especially the Hejaz region), Yemen, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.

Origami Exhibition

I thought to mention, that we have a local Surry Hillian origami lad looking to display his ensemble of folding treats at the cafe. An exhibition of paper and art the of Japanese folding. Watch this space in a couple of weeks, you paper lovers.

Hello all, and welcome to the cafe. We have just started the menu and are excited to offer a range of breakfasts that include our eggs and toasts or our malay/indo style rice and roti's. I will be posting upcoming events in the cafe, such as, morning dj line-ups, acoustic acts as well as relevant information about our foods and our range.

As all good beginnings, we are taking our time to develop our menu. Please don't hesitate to give us feedback, as we are open to offer you the foods you want. We are currently in search for waiting staff and baristas, so if you are interesting about food, art, music and/or coffee - please apply within.
